Nine Lashes Releases Lyric Video for track, “Dear Self”

Nine Lashes has released a new video for their track “Dear Self.” The song is an inner dialogue of such with one’s inner demons, and how to overcome those inner thoughts, conversations, and struggles. The song is a powerful anthem for those who have felt any sort of inner struggle with depression or even trying to die to your self and put on your “new self in Christ” as they put the scripture Romans 6 on the end of the lyric video. Watch the video below:

However the song resonates with you, it is definitely one that musically and vocally is driving, to fit with the tension in the lyrics. It is hard-hitting and gritty. Lyrically the song is like a cry, almost like a chapter out of Psalms in rock form.

The track starts with “You and I, we need to call out for help cause we’ve wandered too far out to sea. I’m alright, I keep telling myself but I’m finding it hard to believe... I’ll never make it out, make it out with all the terrible questions you’re throwing at me.”

The chorus features not only some stellar vocals and driving guitars. The lyrics hit home for anyone who has maybe had this inner self-reflection before.

Dear self
You are the heaviness in my chest, in my chest
Dear self
You are the weariness in my breath, in my breath
For all the times you took control
And all the years of mine you stole
The day has come to let you go
Dear self

So the song is two-fold. The inner struggle of sometimes self worth, self-denial, depression, longing, mental anguish… but also laying that self aside for a new self in Christ and as they put at the end with Romans 6:6-11:

Knowing this, that our old man is crucified with him, that the body of sin might be destroyed, that henceforth we should not serve sin. For he that is dead is freed from sin. Now if we be dead with Christ, we believe that we shall also live with him: knowing that Christ being raised from the dead dieth no more; death hath no more dominion over him. For in that he died, he died unto sin once: but in that he liveth, he liveth unto God. Likewise reckon ye also yourselves to be dead indeed unto sin, but alive unto God through Jesus Christ our Lord.
