The early morning air on the Avenue of the Americas in New York City was buzzing with excited Panheads as hundreds waited for the multi-platinum selling band Skillet to take the stage. The band would be a part of Fox & Friends’ All-American Summer Concert Series, promoting their upcoming album Victorious.
At the early hour of 7:00 a.m., the show began with the band being awarded a plaque celebrating their song “Feel Invincible” becoming RIAA Platinum certified. Additionally, Skillet’s lead vocalist John Cooper was given an axe by the show’s hosts in honor of their new graphic novel Eden (set to release on August 27, 2019). I’m pretty sure that made John’s entire morning; the joyous grin on his face was contagious.

By 8:00 a.m., the band was in full swing, opening up the day with their powerhouse track “Monster.” Passers-by couldn’t help but stop and watch in amazement as Skillet delivered a passionate and powerful performance of all of their hits, including the newly platinum track “Feel Invincible” from Unleashed and the iconic rock anthem “Hero” from Awake. They played eight songs through the course of the hour.
Between the songs Todd Piro, one of the Fox Nation hosts, joined the band on stage and took questions from the crowd. One fan asked John about the inspiration behind the album title Victorious. John replied that the album is named after the track “Victorious,” and that it is “specifically about fighting depression… but is very broadly about the things in your life you want to overcome. We wanted that idea of victory.” This response lead Piro to smile and say that was the best answer to that question he had ever heard.

Another fan asked the ever-pressing question, “How do [John and Korey] carve out couple time to be together on the road?” Korey Cooper chuckled and answered, “This is our couple time right now!” The crowd laughed.
“We just make plans to go on little dates… sometimes it’s to the grocery store, sometimes it’s a walk to the dressing room,” Korey added.
Skillet gave fans quite a surprise as they performed the new single “Anchor” for the first time. Hands were raised in worship as John broke into the chorus. The song is a powerful ballad that describes God’s love as an anchor that can steady you through any storm you may face. They went on to play that song one more time later in the set as they closed out the show. Going the extra mile in usual Skillet fashion, the band stayed to meet the fans after the show, laughing and sharing stories.
Skillet’s tenth studio record, Victorious, is set to release August 2, 2019. You can listen to the four singles from the upcoming album here.
